Shield Jacket CE4Y – A Game Changer for Canyoneers
The incredible world of canyoning is still relatively young, and the development of gear is far from complete. When I first encountered canyoning 12 years ago, things were pretty simple: sports shoes, a 3mm long john and jacket, an old climbing harness with a nappy, a lanyard with snappers, a figure-eight descender, and a helmet. A fine setup to start with, but by now, quite outdated.
In the past 10 years, a lot has happened and been tested in terms of gear development. Think of descenders, specialized hardware, drysuits, shoes, ropes, and basically everything related to the sport.
I’ve personally tried a lot to find my ideal setup, from hardware to all possible options for wetsuits and drysuits. I started with a two-piece wetsuit, then switched to a one-piece wetsuit, and for autumn/winter, I used a drysuit. Each had its advantages but also its limitations.
A few years ago, rain jackets, anoraks, and whitewater dry tops started making their way into the sport. I tested and experimented with many of them to find what worked best for keeping me warm in a canyon. But I never really found the perfect combination for me.
On the recommendation of many friends and colleagues, I finally decided to get a CE4Y Shield Jacket last spring. I wanted to test it myself and see if this would be the best combination for keeping me warm during expeditions, first descents, and aquatic canyons.
From the moment I put it on, it completely changed the game. For me, combined with a one-piece wetsuit, it is the ideal outfit. Whether you’re hanging at a re-belay on a 70m abseil in the spray, swimming 30m through glacier-fed water, or waiting while new bolts are being placed—no problem for the CE4Y Shield Jacket, it keeps you warm!
Thanks to the wrist, waist, and neck closures, some water does get in while swimming, but not much, and it drains fairly easily. With the hood up during an abseil, you block almost all spray, allowing you to focus and see where to place your feet to descend safely.
While waiting in drafty spots in a canyon, the jacket works just like a windbreaker—it keeps you warm without feeling heavy or restrictive.
A huge bonus of the Shield Jacket is the durability of the material. Scraping against rocks, getting into awkward positions against canyon walls—it hardly affects the jacket at all! (As long as you use it normally, of course.)
For me personally, and I believe for the canyoning world as a whole, this jacket is a game-changer. A must-have for canyoneers and guides—absolutely top-notch!
